Us living as
we do upside-down
And the new
word to have is revolution
People don't
even want to hear the preacher spill or spiel
Because
God's whole card has been thoroughly piqued
And America
is now blood and tears instead of milk and honey
The
youngsters who were programmed
To continue
fucking up woke up one night
Digging Paul
Revere and Nat Turner as the good guys
America
stripped for bed and we had not all yet closed our eyes
The signs of
truth were tattooed across our often entered vagina
We learned
to our amazement, the untold tale of scandal
Two long
centuries buried in the musty vault
Hosed down
daily with a gagging perfume
America was
a bastard
The
illegitimate daughter of the mother country
Whose legs
were then spread around the world
And a rapist
known as freedom, free-DOOM
Democracy,
liberty, and justice were revolutionary code names
That
preceded, the bubblin' bubblin' bubblin' bubblin' bubblin'
In the
mother country's crotch
What does
Webster say about soul?
"All I
want is a good home and a wife
And a
children, and some food to feed them every night"
After all is
said and done, build a new route to China if they'll have you
WHO WILL
SURVIVE IN AMERICA?
WHO WILL
SURVIVE IN AMERICA?
WHO WILL
SURVIVE IN AMERICA?
WHO WILL
SURVIVE IN AMERICA?
I am personally moved by this small skit/ speech. I feel like Kanye West makes a very valid point about our American society. I really connected to this skit and was amazed by the way it written.
The thing that stuck out the most to me when I first listened to this skit was his tone and diction. Kanye West used words like rapist and free-DOOM when talking about America and to describe how society has reach this stage. when it came to tone Kanye West sounded to be serious when talking, wanting to inform people about what has slowly happing. But I felt that in some way he was making fun of America. making it seem as a joke describing America as a virginal with a yeast infection.
I listened over and over to this skit daily, as I walked home from school and in the train. it really causes me to listen and think about what's occurring around me. I started thinking in fact who will survive in America? I listen for a better understanding, what does he mean by everything he says? Kanye West uses historical allusion to emphasize his view of America as corrupted and hopeless. for example when he says, "America is now blood and tears instead of milk and honey" is an historical allusion to the bible which refers to Israel the promise land. He also uses repletion to get his message across to the audience.
My favorite line in the skit is "what does Webster say about soul?". This is my favorite line because I think, wow I personally google everything, google is my first doctor, my therapist and everything in between so this line just makes me think like what real answers can we get from the internet? Is it true or worth believing. Webster is a very well know website where anyone can easily find information about almost anything, however anyone can also change and add information so its credulity is questionable.

ReplyDeleteThis song is very interesting. The way how it makes you think about your surroundings, and who will actually survive in America?
ReplyDeleteI personally find your last paragraph to be provocative.
